Self Defense Strategy

Techniques and training methods are not enough. You need to know when to act. Avoidance is by far the best method of self defense, and if you’re aware of your surroundings, stay away from dangerous and isolated areas, have your home and car secure, keep only good company, and leave the moment you feel something isn’t right, you’re highly unlikely to be attacked. However, when you’ve done everything you can to avoid trouble, but you’re threatened and can’t escape, you need to know what you’re going to do. You need a strategy.

The Fundamental 5 in Hertao is not only a set of default responses, but also a strategy. Once you’re threatened, attempt to escape, and cannot, you can use the Fundamental 5. If you can hit and run, then do so. This requires the least amount of time and commitment. If you’re with family who cannot run as fast or have no way of escape, then blast. If you’re attacked by surprise with strikes, crash. If the surprise attack was a clinch or takedown attempt, use the tackle defense. If you’re getting pummeled and were unable to do any of the above, then clinch. This strategy can be applied with and without weapons and against empty hand or weapon attacks.

If awareness and default responses fail, you're in trouble. You'll need a higher level of skills you can only attain through good training in effective techniques and delivery systems. The combination of techniques and training methods on this site in mixed martial arts in general, and boxing, Thai boxing, Filipino martial arts, wing chun, jeet kune do, and Brazilian jiu jitsu in particular will cover all you need.
