The Boxing Jab
The jab is the most common technique used in boxing, and although it's simple, many people don't do it right. You can see the jab done both high and low in the following pictures:

When the jab is thrown, the
head should be down, the
shoulder should protect the chin, and the
rear hand should be raised to the side of the face. It should be snapped out and retracted back along the same line it went out. These measures make it difficult to be counter punched in the face when the jab is thrown. To do the low jab properly it is important to bend at the knees. Throwing a low punch without dropping down leaves your head completely exposed. By dropping and throwing a proper low jab your opponent will have a very difficult time striking you with a simultaneous counter punch.
Although the jab can be a powerful punch, in boxing it is usually used to manipulate distance and to set up additional punches in combination. The jab can be follwed by any other punches...the cross, hook, uppercut, doubling up on the jab, low jab-high jab, etc. Experiment with using the jab whenever your opponent punches. Drop and jab, side step and jab, etc.
