The Catch

The catch is a simple but effective defensive technique used in boxing. It is primarily used against the jab, but can also be effectively used against the cross. In the pictures below you can see the catch being used to defend against a jab. (You can also see the catch at the beginning of the first video on this page: Boxing Techniques and Training.)

Notice that when the attacker steps forward to deliver the jab, the defender simultaneously steps back to defend with the catch. Especially without gloves, failing to step back while using the catch will make it largely ineffective. Even with gloves, if your opponent throws a hard jab and you do not move back on the catch, your hand/glove will likely hit you in the face.

The most common mistake people make in performing the catch is to reach forward for the punch. Reaching forward will allow your opponent to fake the jab and score with a hook. Keep the catch relatively close to your face, as if you were pressing an imaginary, transparent shield. Once you feel comfortable with this standard catch, try it with a sidestep to your outside (left sidestep if you have a left lead), and a simultaneous jab to your opponent's face.
